Stem Cell Transplant Procedure

Stem cell transplant procedure refers to the process and the steps followed when replacing the blood cells or the bone marrow of a patient with healthy bone marrow or blood from the same patient (autologous), from a twin sister or brother (synegenic), from a childs umbilical cord (cord bold) or from another person (allogeneic).

The donor of the bone marrow or blood cells must be subjected to anesthesia while obtaining the healthy blood cells from the blood stream. The stem cell transplant procedure requires that the donor be given special medication to stimulate the production of stem cells in to the blood stream some four to five days before the stem cell transplant.

In autologous stem cell transplant, the patients blood or bone marrow is taken and placed in a freezer (apheresis) and taken through a machine which isolates and kills the infected cells especially in cancer treatments. After the infected bone marrow or blood has been removed from the patient, a strong dose of radiology or chemotherapy is administered upon the patient to clear the body tissues of any infected cells.

If the infected cells are not properly treated or removed from the patients blood, there are very high chances of relapse (reinfection) and to prevent this, doctors will treat your blood with some drugs to aid the apheresis machine in killing those infected cells. In stem cell procedure this is referred to as purging.

In analogous stem cell transplant procedure, doctors are very cautious in identifying the best donor for you because there are very high possibilities of your body rejecting that donated blood cells or bone marrow and putting your life at risk. To prevent this, doctors prefer selecting your close relatives by blood to donate a healthy bone marrow or blood cells and to reduce the chances of rejection.

Where there are no close relatives by blood, a stranger may be identified to donate healthy bone marrow or blood cells to you but the strangers blood has to be tested to reduce the chances of graft rejection.
